Event Description

Go ahead make my Earthday! On April 22nd don’t call in sick, call in “well” and tell your boss that you are going to “Take it Off!”

The idea is simple, minimize our individual and collective impact or (optimally) give back to our planet. The true beauty of this campaign is that we really aren’t asking you to do anything… we are actually asking you to do nothing… pretty rad right. If you wanna get a little crazy go ahead and nurture yourself and nurture your Planet.

Thanks for your reply and explanation, Frank. This event makes a bit more sense now, and I agree with you on many of your points. To quote the Agent Smith from the Matrix: "I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet."

It's quite a shame, really. I'll try to keep this event in mind in the future (assuming it's annual) Even if it's not, still wouldn't hurt to take earth day off and spend the day just relaxing, enjoying the world, and doing my part to clean up what I can (not that I don't try to every day.) Have you heard the saying "Leave no trace"? I believe that that applies to more than simply Boy Scouts and camping. If everyone followed those simple three words, I believe the Earth would be a much cleaner place (although it could also be argued that it might be more boring, as well, if we leave no lasting impression. It's important to leave behind a good example.)

Hey Jacob, thanx for commenting we value your views. So if your boss is cool with it then go for it, if you are going to get fired then I wouldn't recommend you take the day off. As far as what it is supposed to accomplish that is simple, do the math; lets say most everything in the world shuts down for one day (except critical life support systems and other essential devices and systems), we would resolve a huge part of our human impact problem. Being involved in environmental issues isn't about the Global Warming debate or any of the other catch phrase news topics, it is about human efficiency and impact. Pesticides pollute (period), industrial waste causes medical problems, gluttony and waste destroy everything. This isn't about saving the Earth, I doubt that humans can destroy the earth, we are nothing more than a bacteria or virus living on the surface. If we cannot regulate our environment and our species cannot manage ourselves, then the earth will deal with us the same way your body deals with illness, the immune system will take us out. We take & take & take & take, when is it time to give back or just stop taking and respect our host. Think of taking Earthday off as a Sabbath, a day we are supposed to just rest and spend it with our family. If a significant amount of people take the day off then we will save resources, eliminate pollutants, relieve stress and 100's of other positive benefits. Our species is moving faster, working more, on the cell phone and computers all day. It used to be that when you left work people couldn't really get a hold of you unless you were at home, now we are accessible all of the time and it never stops. Is that progress or regress? In America our education has gone down hill, people work more, they are sicker than any other time in history, autism is found in something like 1 and every 75 boys and 1 in every 95 girls, we have less money, more debt, more stress and the highest level of incarcerated population of any country on earth. Is that progress or regress? I think we can do better, that is what living a natural, organic and low stress life is all about and if more people lived that way, we would all be better off.

Thanx again or your comments, have a great day!

I don't see what this is supposed to accomplish, and I'm sure our bosses would be very pleased with us the next day when we come back. So pleased they might give us a permanent vacation.
