Green sport is growing…slowly!

Climate Wave is excited to see that there is some movement towards green sports and in this case from North America. The Green Sports Alliance has formed to encourage sporting bodies to become environmentally conscious and spread the word to fans and sponsors.

We are starting to find pockets of organisations around the world that like us feel that sporting events can go green and use this platform to spread the message of…

$0.05 bottle deposit whats up with that?

Hi everybody.  Im originally from New York-a place with  5 cent bottle deposits,  which means you give them an extra 5 cents for every bottle and then when you recycle it you get your deposit back.  Now I live in Baltimore, MD.  A state that doesn't have five cent deposits which means no extra cash going out for every drink that you purchase.  So the question is "are five cent bottle deposits good?"  YES!  I can't tell you how many bottles I have to see on the side of the road just walking a… Continue

Recycled cotton

Did you know...

Recycled cotton textiles are produced from excess clippings from pre-consumer sources, which are typically discarded during the apparel cut and sew process. Clippings are then sorted by color and chopped into a fine linty material called "shoddy". The shoddy is then spun into a yarn that is used to produce…

The ASEC Earthday Philosophy as seen through views of its founder and Executive Director, Frank Scura.... Take it Off!

Give the Earth a real vacation on Earthday

Earthday? What is Earthday? Who or what exactly is this holiday for? Is it for people or is it for the Earth? If it is for us humans then shouldn’t it be called something like "Human Earth Awareness Day," I am down for a holiday like that, then our buzzing around, gathering in large crowds and utilizing precious resources trying to get people to acknowledge the Earth as a living entity, that sustains all life and…

Organic Cotton vs. Recycled Polyester

An insightful article about the different environmental impact of cotton and polyester fiber production. It concludes that recycled polyester fiber, produced from existing polyester products, is possibly more sustainable than organic cotton fiber.

We are facing climate change, resource depletion, and full landfills. Maybe it’s time to think about recyclable even more than about renewable. And as the study concludes: recycled polyester fiber “produced from existing polyester textile… Continue

Mythbuster: Increased water use of organic cotton?

A little while ago I talked to the head of a well-known snowboard brand who is very much in favor of sustainability and tries to push this topic within the company. Against quite a bit of resistance he manages to overcome some internal obstacles to launch multiple products containing organic cotton. At one of the first press conferences announcing this new move he got some very critical feedback from a, let’s call him “green” journalist that said: “Well, congratulations, you have now moved to a… Continue
